SSC CHSL Syllabus and Exam Pattern

Tier-I Exam Pattern

The Tier-I examination will consist of Objective Type, Multiple Choice questions.

  • Total Duration: 60 minutes (80 minutes for candidates eligible for a scribe).

  • Negative Marking: There will be a negative marking of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer.

  • Language of Paper: The questions will be set in English, Hindi, and any language opted by the candidate for Part-II, III, & IV.

Tier-I Indicative Syllabus

1. English Language:

  • Spot the Error, Fill in the Blanks, Synonyms/Homonyms, Antonyms, Spellings/Detecting mis-spelt words, Idioms & Phrases, One word substitution, Improvement of Sentences, Active/Passive Voice of Verbs, Conversion into Direct/Indirect narration, Shuffling of Sentence parts, Shuffling of Sentences in a passage, Cloze Passage, Comprehension Passage.

2. General Intelligence:

  • Includes both verbal and non-verbal questions.

  • Topics: Semantic Analogy, Symbolic operations, Symbolic/Number Analogy, Trends, Figural Analogy, Space Orientation, Semantic Classification, Venn Diagrams, Symbolic/Number Classification, Drawing inferences, Figural Classification, Punched hole/pattern-folding & unfolding, Semantic Series, Figural Pattern-folding and completion, Number Series, Embedded figures, Figural Series, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Emotional Intelligence, Word Building, Social Intelligence, Coding and de-coding, Numerical operations.

3. Quantitative Aptitude:

  • Number Systems: Computation of Whole Number, Decimal and Fractions, Relationship between numbers.

  • Fundamental arithmetical operations: Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Square roots, Averages, Interest (Simple and Compound), Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business, Mixture and Alligation, Time and distance, Time and work.

  • Algebra: Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra and Elementary surds (simple problems) and Graphs of Linear Equations.

  • Geometry: Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles.

  • Mensuration: Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder, Sphere, Hemispheres, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square Base.

  • Trigonometry: Trigonometry, Trigonometric ratios, Complementary angles, Height and distances (simple problems only), Standard Identities like sin²θ + cos²θ=1, etc.

  • Statistical Charts: Use of Tables and Graphs: Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar-diagram, Pie-chart.

4. General Awareness:

  • Questions are designed to test the candidate’s general awareness of the environment and its application to society.

  • Topics: Current events, India and its neighboring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General policy, and scientific research.

Tier-II Exam Pattern

  • Tier-II is conducted in two sessions (Session-I and Session-II) on the same day.

  • It is mandatory for candidates to qualify in all sections of Tier-II.

  • Negative Marking: There is a negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer in Section-I, Section-II, and Section-III.

Details for Skill Test / Typing Test (Qualifying Nature):

  • Part A (DEO in specific Depts.): Speed of 15,000 Key Depressions per hour on Computer. Passage of 3700-4000 key-depressions.

  • Part B (DEO): Speed of 8,000 Key Depressions per hour on Computer. Passage of 2000-2200 key-depressions.

  • Part C (LDC/JSA):

    • Medium: English or Hindi (as opted in the application form).

    • English Medium: Typing speed of 35 words per minute (w.p.m.) (approx. 10500 key depressions per hour).

    • Hindi Medium: Typing speed of 30 w.p.m. (approx. 9000 key depressions per hour).

Tier-II Indicative Syllabus

1. Module-I of Session-I (Mathematical Abilities):

  • Number Systems, Fundamental Arithmetical Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Mensuration, Trigonometry. (Topics are similar to Tier-I but may be of a higher level).

  • Statistics and Probability: Use of Tables and Graphs, Measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode), standard deviation, calculation of simple probabilities.

2. Module-II of Session-I (Reasoning and General Intelligence):

  • Topics are the same as Tier-I, covering both verbal and non-verbal reasoning.

3. Module-I of Session-II (English Language And Comprehension):

  • Vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms and their correct usage.

  • Topics also include: Spot the Error, Fill in the Blanks, Idioms & Phrases, One word substitution, Improvement of Sentences, Active/Passive Voice, Direct/Indirect narration, Shuffling of Sentence parts, Cloze Passage, Comprehension Passage.

  • Comprehension: Two or more paragraphs will be given. One paragraph will be simple (based on a book or story) and the other will be based on a current affairs editorial or report.

4. Module-II of Session-II (General Awareness):

  • Syllabus is the same as Tier-I, testing general awareness of the environment, current events, and matters of everyday observation related to India and its neighboring countries (History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General policy, and scientific research).

5. Module-I of Session-III (Computer Knowledge/Proficiency):

  • Computer Basics: Organization of a computer, CPU, input/output devices, computer memory, memory organization, back-up devices, PORTs, Windows Explorer, Keyboard shortcuts.

  • Software: Windows Operating system including basics of Microsoft Office like MS Word, MS Excel and Power Point etc.

  • Working with Internet and e-mails: Web Browsing & Searching, Downloading & Uploading, Managing an E-mail Account, e-Banking.

  • Basics of networking and cyber security: Networking devices and protocols, Network and information security threats (like hacking, virus, worms, Trojan etc.) and preventive measures.
